Progression Path by Years of Hockey Experience
Learn to Skate
The formative years of hockey where the basics are learned in a fun and inclusive environment geared towards anchoring the love of the sport and developing trust and friendship with coaches and teammates.
A "Learn to Skate" program is designed to teach fundamental skating skills to beginners, whether they are kids or adults. Here are some of the key skills learned in such a program:
Key Skills:
- Balance
- Forward Skating
- Stopping
- Turning
- Falling and Getting Up
Typical Programming expectations:
- Commitment Level: 1-2 days / week
- Weeks / Year: 7-10
Equipment Guide
Warm Jacket
Rinks aren't the warmest places around. Bring a warm jacket and you'll be just fine.
Skates
Rented or owned, plenty of skate options available to consider.
Helmet
When learning to skate, a bike or ski helmet is all you need to get going.
Mittens or Gloves
Protect those precious hands from the cold ice and skate blades with a pair of warm gloves.
Sweatpants / Snowpants
Either works to keep you warm and dry.

Rules of the game
Like any sport, hockey's rules can be confusing at times. Our guidebook boils it down to the essentials and makes it easy to understand and refer to when you need more detail. Learn the difference between Icing and Offside in less time than it takes to play a period.

Good preparation is the key to fun on the ice! Whether it's simple exercises and drills to keep players limber, or stretches to aid in flexibility and recovery, our guide will show you great ways to stay fresh and give your kid the edge on ice and off.
